How to Replace a Volvo Replacement Key Fob

Your Volvo key fob does so much more than unlock and lock your car. It's also an advanced anti-theft device that makes use of special technology to communicate with your car in order to deter theft.

What happens when the battery of your key fob is dead? Volvo Cars Mission Viejo's team has the answers.

How to unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer greater functionality and ease of use when compared to manual keys. Batteries eventually degrade and require replacement. If your Volvo key fob is beginning to work intermittently, that's an indication that the battery is depleted and will need to be replaced soon.

Fortunately, there are easy steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. First, find a clean work surface to begin the process. Place all the tools you'll need. Find the battery hatch and ensure it is set to "open." Use a flathead screwdriver or coin or a similar tool to turn the hatch off. Then, carefully pull out the battery by lifting the side closest to the key-ring hook. Use rubber gloves to protect the clips and electronic contact surfaces.

After the battery is removed, put the new one in its socket. Make sure that the positive side is facing up and that it's seated in all the clips. Then, slide the cover back down and toward the key-ring loop until it becomes loose and slips off. Then, remove the cover to reveal the hidden mechanical key blade. It can be used to unlock your car from the driver's seat if you have lost or damaged the key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Most modern vehicles are equipped with key fobs that can do much more than unlock or lock the doors. They can also perform other useful functions like summoning and auto-parking the vehicle. The new Volvo XC60 is capable of remotely starting your engine with the key fob buttons. How exactly does it work?

Choose a surface which you can set up the necessary items to complete this project. Lay the fob on the surface with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Use a flathead or coin, or similar tool to open the battery hatch. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces using your tools. This can cause the fob to cease working properly.

Once the hatch is opened, place the battery into its socket. Make sure that the positive (+ side) is facing up. After the clips are secured into place, replace cover of the battery and then reassemble the fob.

By pressing the unlock button once, the alarm will be disengaged and the door for the driver will be unlocked. Pressing it a second time will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be useful for rolling down the windows to let in fresh, cool air on a hot summer's day. If you're looking for more than that, the key fob could also be used to activate ERS, which can start your vehicle's climate control system and allow it to cool or warm it to the desired temperature setting when the vehicle is in a parking spot.

How to Replace the Battery

If your key fob no more locks or unlocks your vehicle it is possible that it is time to replace the battery. The battery can be replaced with a flathead screwdriver, pry bar made of plastic or other small tools. First, locate the small slot that the backup / emergency key for ignition made of metal used to reside. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or prybar tool into this slot and then gently pull the rear of the fob open. After the fob is open you can locate the CR2032 3V battery and take it off. Replace the battery, then snap the fob.

Note: Certain older Volvo models have an entirely different type of battery that is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 tenths of a millimeter thinner than a CR2032 battery, which means you will need to be extra careful when placing the battery of your replacement.
